Where Should You Keep Your Auto Insurance ID Card?

Your Auto Insurance ID card should be kept in your car with your registration, not in your wallet or purse. When you buy auto insurance you are insuring your car first and yourself second. If you are stopped by a police officer, he is going to as for proof that the car you are driving is registered in the state of California and proof that the car you are driving is insured. He/she will also ask for your license to verify that you are legally able to drive.

If you are driving someone else’s car and are unable to provide proof that car is insured, you will be cited for failing to provide evidence of insurance. Your ID card for your car will not help you. Notice that when you receive your auto insurance renewal there is an ID card that corresponds to each car that is on your policy. The drivers that are on your policy may be listed on your ID cards, but the cards are really for each car and should be kept there.
